Online school tip
If you are a work at home mom or if you are working on major design jobs and want to know if what you are using is 100% wool or not, this online school test will help you .
100% Wool melts in clorine bleach, unless it has had a UV treatment (this is done to make it more suitalbe for outdoor use) in which case it may or may not melt, depending on the process used to treat it.
Another online school tip
The burn test in which 100% Wool burns to a fine ash and smells like burning hair, and if it is a blend there will be a hard plastic type residue left (not flaky but similar to what a plastic fork would look like if you got it to close to a flame), or if it has a UV treatment it may leave a hard flaky residue
If you are a work at home mom, you probably have little ones around, so you might want to wait till they are out of the room before you do either of these tests.
See what beautiful accessories you can make at home from remnants. As beautiful as any online brand, or designers design jobs.
Online school lesson one
No matter what your design jobs are the first rule of any sewing project is to do a sew test. Take pieces of the left over material from your design jobs and sew two, three, or four of them together. The number of pieces you use depends on how many layers are in the seams of your design jobs. Adjust the machines tensions until the stitch patterns look the way you want them to look on your finished design jobs.
Online school lesson two
If your design jobs use cordura, or sunbrella it is best to heat seal the edges, and sew flat seams instead of folded seams wherever possible.
Online school definitions
heat seal edges- take a hot knife ( these can be purchased at any crafts supplies shop), and with a steady motion, run it along the edge of you fabric. The online school suggests you practice on a few scraps until you feel comfortable with the process.
flat seam - is just exacltly what it says, nothing is folded under
Online school lesson three
When doing flat seams on cordura, or sunbrella, lay out the pieces of your design jobs, and using a double sided craft tape, join the seams in the way you want to sew them, press them, and then sew them. This will make the seams on all your design jobs come out nice and even.
Online school definitions
double sided craft tape - similar to double sided scotch tape, but is more flexible, and will not loose it's stickiness when washed.
Online school tip
Before pressing your seams take a scrap of the fabric, and press it to be sure your iron does not leave marks on your design jobs. If you find that the iron is leaving a shiny mark, or is melting the fabric, take a piece of cotton fabric and put it between the iron and your design jobs.
Online school tip
To set the colors in natural fibers wash them in warm water, add 1 cup of salt to the water.
Online school lesson four
When doing design jobs with long seams, like drapes, cut your fabric an inch longer to allow for the amount of shrinkage that will be caused from the sewing. Longer stitches will help lessen the shrinkage to the seams in your design jobs.
Online school tip
Cut the salvage edge off drapery fabric, and your seams will lay flatter.
